J. Aston
Legal Experience
Mr. Aston has over twenty years of intellectual property experience. After
graduating from the University of Denver College of Law, he began the practice
of patent law with the United States Navy. After spending three years in
private practice at Klaas and Law in Denver, Colorado, he joined Cutter
Laboratories (now Bayer Corporation) in 1981. While at Bayer, he specialized
in health care and biotechnology inventions. He also served as manager of
commercial development and assistant director of regulatory affairs for
biotherapeutics. In 1992 he joined the University of California Office of
Technology Transfer as Biotechnology Licensing Manager, later becoming Associate
Director, Life Sciences. At the Office of Technology Transfer he was responsible
for patenting and licensing inventions made at all nine University of California
campuses. He moved to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he served
as Chief Patent Counsel, in 1998.
Mr. Aston has extensive experience in drafting
and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications, as well
as in related intellectual property matters. He has participated
in numerous patent litigations, interferences and inventorship
determinations. At LBNL he maintained a prosecution docket
in the life sciences area and advised management in numerous
patent, software, information technology, and general legal
matters.
Technical Experience
Mr. Aston graduated from the Pennsylvania State University
with a B.S. in Biophysics in 1968. He then served in the U.S.
Army as a clinical laboratory and blood banking specialist.
In 1989-1990, he attended San Francisco State University full
time to pursue an M.A. in Cell and Molecular Biology. He has
worked on leading edge inventions from the University of California
for twelve years, in a wide range of technical disciplines.
Professional Affiliations
Mr. Aston is a member of the Colorado and California bars,
and is admitted to practice before the United States Patent
and Trademark Office. He is a member of the Licensing Executives
Society (USA and Canada, Inc.), having served as the San Francisco
Committee chair 1994-1996. He is also a member of the San
Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, and is a
frequent speaker on patent and licensing topics. |
