Allston L. Jones

Legal Experience
Mr. Jones received his Juris Doctor in 1977 from the Santa Clara University School of Law.

Mr. Jones has over twenty years of comprehensive U.S. and foreign patent and trademark practice, during which time he has prepared and prosecuted more than two hundred patent applications. He is a founding partner of Peters, Verny, Jones & Schmitt, LLP. formerly called Peters, Verny, Jones & Biksa, LLP. Previously, he was Assistant Patent Counsel at Hewlett-Packard Co. and is a former partner with the law firms of Boone, Park & Jones; Boone, Fox & Jones; Jones & Smith; Wiseman, Jones & Smith; Phillips, Moore, Lempio & Finley, and formerly of-counsel with Burns, Doane, Swecker & Mathis and Cohen & Ostler.

In those positions, Mr. Jones provided, and continues to provide, counsel in all aspects of intellectual property, including U.S. and foreign patent, trademark, copyright and trade secrets law, preparation and prosecution of applications; drafting of licenses; preparation of consulting, distribution and confidential disclosure agreements; and preparation of validity and infringement opinions; as well as in litigation support.

Technical Experience
Mr. Jones received his Dr. Sci. in 1971 from Stanford University on an Honors Co-Op program while working in industry as an Engineer. Prior to that he attended Purdue University under a Graduate Fellowship and received his MSEE in 1966. Additionally, Mr. Jones holds a BSEE degree from Drexel University which was granted in 1964.

While at Drexel, he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society in 1963, and Eta Kappa Nu, the National Electrical Engineering Honor Society in 1964.

Prior to attending law school, Mr. Jones held several positions as an Electrical Engineer working in the areas of Naval Ordnance, Radar Detection, and Satellite Communications and Power Control Systems.

As a patent attorney, Mr. Jones has worked with and developed special expertise with a broad range of electronic, software, mechanical and optical technologies. In those areas Mr. Jones' interests include: hardware and software applications in telecommunications systems (RF; cable and wire), digital image analysis, pattern recognition, computer modeling, video control, virtual reality computer and microprocessor controlled devices, digital technology, network and spectrum analysis systems, high speed inspection systems (optical, x-ray and e-beam), semiconductor lithographic systems, laser technology and applications, optical and opto-electronic systems, semiconductor devices and processes, human prosthetic and medical devices, medical monitoring systems, electrostatic and ink-jet techniques, printers and printing techniques, mechanical handling and packaging apparatus, mechanical forming devices, servo and stepper motor controls, and magnetic memory drive systems.

Professional Affiliations
Mr. Jones is a member of the State Bar of California, and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, U.S. Supreme Court, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is also a member of the Commonwealth Club of California, American Intellectual Property Law Association, San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, Peninsula Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
